The first entry is a transcript of the journal of Gurdon B. Garlinghouse, born in 1854 in Lenawee County, Michigan. He married Minnie Gates in 1879 and they had four children: May, 1881; Ethelyn, 1882; Otto, 1885 and Arnet, 1888.

The journal is being transcribed by Holly Wilson Sweet, great-grand-daughter of Gurdon and Minnie, beginning January 2005. Notes are in brackets are Holly's.

1 Sunday We all went up to Church today. We all went to Grandmas to dinner.

2 Monday Geo and I husked corn on Dr Whites this AM. This PM Geo went over to M. Smeltzers and helped him thrash.

3 Tues It rained all day. Geo worked on wagon wheels. I fixed corn crib & c. {Otto would have been 8 years old on this day.}

4 Wed Geo and I husked corn all day on Dr. Whites land. This Eve Stanley & May Harkness called and took tea with us.

5 Thursday Geo and I husked corn on Dr. Whites this AM. This PM Geo drew in one load of corn from there & cultivated wheat in on potatoe patch. I finished digging potatoes and sowed wheat broadcast on the patch. This eve Minnie, Ethel & I went to church to social.

6 Friday Geo and I husked corn on Dr. Whites this AM. This PM Geo drew in one full load. M.D. Billmeyer called at noon, staid till 4 o’clock PM.

7 Saturday Geo and I husked corn on Dr. Whites this AM. This PM Geo drew in 2 full loads corn from Dr’s. I helped pick it up and husked 5 shock. Minnie and the Children went over to Aunt Hannah Margeson’s & got some nuts. Geo went up to town to night, paid him $3.00.

8 Sunday We all went up to Church to day. This PM May, Otto and I went down to the woods and salted the stock.

9 Monday Geo and I husked corn this AM on Dr. Whites. This PM I helped Minnie about the washing and churning. Geo drew a load from Dr’s field.

10 Tuesday Geo and I husked corn this AM on Dr. Whites. This PM Geo set 8 fence posts on east side of barn yard. I went down to the woods and sowed Timothy seed (1 2/3 bu). It was late before I arove home. Called on Cornelius. We divided our corn down there, each have half, every other row.

11 Wed Geo and I husked corn on Dr. White’s this AM. This PM Geo drew a load from there. I nailed some boards on barn yard fence and went up to town and got some lumber nails and horse shod. Geo sawed boards for fence.

12 Thurs Uncle David was here this PM. Geo and I husked corn on Dr. Whites and finished husking our share there this AM. This PM Geo drew in the rest of the corn from there, a good load. Uncle David Garlinghouse called and staid with us this PM. I fixed some barn yard fence this PM.

13 Friday Geo and I drew stalks from Dr Whites today, 7 loads. About 950 bundles. Stacked them on east side of barn yard. It was rainy this eve. Minnie was sick all day, not able to do anything.

14 Saturday It was a rainy day. Geo took 3 bu wheat down to Mill for grist and put up wheat in bags that was on barn floor this AM. This PM he painted the ……..on the big wagon. I took some butter up to Miss Dingman and …..Kelly; called on Mother.

15 Sunday Minnie and I went down to L.D. Kenyons today. Mr Dykeman & daughter were there. Jenny & May were there also. Lulu Garlinghouse died this PM about 4 PM.

16 Monday I husked corn today in No. 7. Geo did not work for me today. Minnie went up to Dan’s this PM.

17 Tuesday I husked corn in No. 7 this AM. This PM I drew in a load from No. 7. This eve Minnie and the Children went up to Dan’s a little while to see the remains of Lulu. Geo did not work for me today.

18 Weds Geo & I husked corn this AM in No. 7 and drew in one load this AM. This PM Minnie & I went up to Lulu Garlinghouse’s funeral at 2 o’clock PM. Geo did not work this PM. Sold veal calf 4 weeks old to W. Marsh for $5.00.

19 Thurs Geo and I went down to the wood lot and husked and drew up a load of corn (40 bu) today. This Eve Minnie and I went to Meeting of the E.S.

20 Friday Geo and I went up on field No. 7 and husked 3 shock of corn. Then it began raining and rained all the rest of the day. Geo went up to town and staid all day. Mother, Mr Benj Dykeman and his daughter Mrs. Hough came down and visited us today. I went up to Lodge this eve.

21 Saturday Geo and I went down to the woods and husked corn today. We drew home a load of stalks.

22 Sunday We all went to Church to day.

23 Monday Geo and I went down to the wood lot and husked corn today. We drew home a full load (50 bu).

24 Tuesday Geo and I drew in a load of corn that was not husked – 20 shock and put on barn floor. Then we husked corn the rest of the AM and drew it in in No. 7. This PM we went over to the Uncle John Margeson farm to an Auction. (B.A.G. and Leslie Van Doren Administrators).

25 Weds We went down to the lower place and husked and drew home a load of corn today. This eve Geo & I went up to town. I went to Lodge. Geo went to see his Honey.

26 Thurs It was rainy today. Geo husked corn in the barn today. This PM I went down to an auction at Mr Biddles on Mr A.G. Halls farm. Bought 4 pullups & 3 hooks.

27 Friday Geo did not work today. I husked corn in No. 7 today. This eve I went up to Lodge 1º work (Chas R. Miller)

28 Saturday I went down to the lower place and got a load of stalks this AM. Geo finished husking corn in No. 7 and split some wood this AM. This PM we drew in the stalks from No. 7 and a load of corn, cleaned up the corn on Home farm today. I went over to C. Whites and got some cabbage. Mother was down a little while. Let Geo go home from work.

29 Sunday We all went to Church to day. Dr. John Webster arove from the World’s Fair at Mothers this AM about noon.

30 Monday I went down to lower place and tied up corn that was not husked and drew home a load of stalks on top of corn. Geo and May were down and packed up their things and took a 1 horse load home with them.

31 Tuesday I went down to the lower place and drew home a load of unhusked corn this AM. This PM I drew down 62 bu wheat that was on barn floor to Boyds Mill. Paid Geo J. Benedict $25.00 and School Main $12.00. I drew down a load of wheat for Wm Cupples this PM to Boyd’s Mill.
