The first entry is a transcript of the journal of Gurdon B. Garlinghouse, born in 1854 in Lenawee County, Michigan. He married Minnie Gates in 1879 and they had four children: May, 1881; Ethelyn, 1882; Otto, 1885 and Arnet, 1888.

The journal is being transcribed by Holly Wilson Sweet, great-grand-daughter of Gurdon and Minnie, beginning January 2005. Notes are in brackets are Holly's.

1 Wed I went down to the lower place and brought up the last load of unhusked corn this AM. This PM I drew one load of wheat down to Mill for Wm. Cupples, then we went to Auction at Elwood Comfort’s.

2 Thursday I drew a load of wood up to Mr. Cupples this Morn, then Frank Bryan and I moved the Library to the church to the place it was in before tuning the Organ. This PM I took Minnie up to Church and this eve I and the Children went up to supper at Church Social. Received payment from Mr. Dewey for 6 bu wheat @ 60¢ = $3.60.

3 Friday I went down to the woods and drew a load of wood to Mr. Wm Cupples 2 ? cords. And fixed up some fence on E side of barn yard. Brought home narrow-tired wagon from James Elliott.

4 Saturday I went down to the woods and drew a load of wood to Mr. Wm Cupples 2 ? cords. He paid me ball due from Clover seed & work $9.25. Frank Bryan and Family were down and spend the PM and eve.

5 Sunday We all went up to Church today.

6 Monday I drew home 2 loads of Buzz wood from the woods that Mr. Brims sawed today. Paid Cornelius $3.00 on a/c ball due $1.43.

7 Tuesday I drew 1 load of Buzz wood from the woods today. Minnie went up to town to Mr Cupples this PM. I went up this eve to tea. The Children went up their Grandmothers and staid this eve. We went to Presbyterian Church and saw Rev Mr. Brown installed as the Pastor of Tecumseh Presbyterian Church.

8 Wed I drew 2 loads of Buzz wood from the woods today.

9 Thurs I drew up 1 load of elm wood today (3 cords) and went over to Mr White’s a little while. Lecture at Baptist Church this eve. Rev Washington Gardner delivered lecture: Nine Tenths of the Nineteenth Century.

10 Friday I drew up a load of wood from the woods today (3 cord elm). This PM I went up to B. Church to a bee to grade and fill in celler where old Parsonage formally {formerly} stood.

11 Saturday The boys and I went down to the woods this AM. The boys brought the Heifer home (Fannie) and I brought home a load of wood (2 ? cords). This PM I cut the boys hair and this eve Minnie & I went up to town. Minnie went up to town this AM, staid till about 5 o’clock PM.

12 Sunday We all went up to Church today.

13 Monday I fixed sill to Hog Pen where we go in to feed and the sill to horse barn where we go into the horse barn.

14 Tuesday I raised up and put pieces under the posts on S. side of Hog pen and fixed some floor in center pen, went up to town this PM after some nails & c a few minutes. This Eve Minnie & I drove up to John Heesons & to J.K. Waldrons a little while.

15 Weds I finished putting floor in Hog Pen this AM and fixed so the Hogs could come in. Minnie & I went up to town to meet her cousins on 11-11 train, but they did not come. This eve Minnie’s cousins came about 6 oclock. Mr & Mrs. Mathew Gates.

16 Thurs I visited with Minnie’s cousins today. This PM we all went up to town and rove around some. Sold Charlie White coal stove for seven Dollars cash.

17 Friday Visited with Cousins today. This PM we drove up to Cemetery around by the old farm and home.

18 Saturday Mr. Gates, the Boys and I went down to the woods and drove the Cattle & Colt up and put them in the barn yard.

19 Sunday We all went up to Church except Mr. Gates & the Boys.

20 Monday We took Mr and Mrs Mathew Gates up to morning train this AM. I worked around the Barn fixing for the cattle & sheep.

21 Tuesday It was cold & snowy today. I worked around the Barn & shed fixing for the cattle & sheep.

22 Weds Otto and I went down and brought the sheep home from the woods this AM. This Eve I went up to Chapter Meeting. This PM Otto & I went up to town. I bought each of the boys a pair of boots.

23 Thurs Regular Order of Eastern Star. I went up to town and bought a new stove of D.S. Whitinack; brought it home and set it up in sitting room; fixed the stoves around ready for Winter. This Eve Minnie and I went up to Star Meeting. Two members joined (Mrs. Burlingame & Grace Glaspin?) Fannie had a calf today.

24 Friday I went down and helped Dr. White thrash his wheat today. It was cold & stormy. Fred Nichols came and staid all night with us. He and I went up to Lodge meeting. 3do work, Charles Miller candidate.

25 Saturday Fred Nichols dehorned three head of calttle for me this AM. O.B. came over and assisted. This PM Minnie and I went up to Mrs. P.V. Woodward’s Funeral at 2 PM at the church. The Girls went up to Missionary Meeting. May staid with her Grandmother.

26 Sunday We all went up to Church to day.

27 Monday It was rainy to day. I helped Minnie some about washing and tinkered around the barn to rest of the time.

28 Tuesday I fixed place in shed so to shut the cattle in from the storm and to feed them, fixed feed racks and boarded up E side and fixed a slide door.

29 Weds Fixed up a partition to separate the lambs from Ewes in the yard and made a sliding door between them where we water them. Seperated the Lambs from the Ewes. It rained very hard this PM.

30 Thurs We all went up to Mothers to day and ate Thanksgiving dinner with her. A fine big Turkey was devoured in morsels to best fit the inner man and other things in abundance. Ben and Burt were both at home to Dinner.
