Minnie Gates as a girl
The first entry is a transcript of the journal of Gurdon B. Garlinghouse, born in 1854 in Lenawee County, Michigan. He married Minnie Gates in 1879 and they had four children: May, 1881; Ethelyn, 1882; Otto, 1885 and Arnet, 1888.

The journal is being transcribed by Holly Wilson Sweet, great-grand-daughter of Gurdon and Minnie, beginning January 2005. Notes are in brackets are Holly's.

Wed            I went down to the woods and drew a load of wood and took it up to G.J.B. - 1 1⁄2 cords.  Took 3 12/60 bu. wheat up to Dan B.G. and 2 bu corn & 2 bu oats up for to get ground for cows.  Bought $3.62 worth of Bran of Bard & Root.  Paid them $5.00 in full of all accounts to date. This Eve I went up to chapter Meeting R.A.M work.

2 Thursday            I went down to the woods and drew home a load of wood this A.M. – 1¾ cord.  This P.M. Minnie, Arnie and I went up to Church to Meeting (Roll Call) & Social.  Minnie staid to social and Arnie & I came home. This eve Minnie & I went to Chapter Eastern Star.

3 Friday            I went over Mr. Cupples and helped him tie his chickens to take to market. Mr. Cupples came and took our horses and bobs to take them away. I husked some corn in the big barn.  This eve Minnie and I went up to Lecture Entertainment. Marshall P. Wilder Co.

4 Saturday            I staid at home this A.M. Mr. Geo C. Hall and son of Blissfield called here about noon and took dinner with us. I hired the son to work for me this season at $18.00 per month. I took them up to town. Mr. & Mrs. Cupples took tea with us this eve.  This Eve I went up to Chapter meeting. work in R.A. Degree.

 5 Sunday            The Girls and I went up to Church to day.           

6 Monday            I helped some about the washing this A.M.  This P.M. I husked corn out in the big barn. This Eve I went over to Mr. Cupples a little while.

7 Tuesday            Minnie, Arnie and I went up to Mr. F.M Bryan’s to day to a Chicken Pie Dinner. Cap Chilson & Family, Mr & Mrs Smith, Mr & Mrs J.K. Waldron were there.  A very nice, bright day. This eve the Girls, Minnie & I went up to R. Gillispie’s to Farmers Club. Mr. & Mrs. Chilson went with us.

8 Wed            I went down and helped open the road south of Mr. Cupples this A.M. This P.M. it rained, staid at home.

9 Thurs            Minnie, Arnie and I went up to town and took dinner with G.J. B’s folks to day. This eve I went down to Adrian to meeting of Adrian and Tecumseh Chapters for School of Instruction. Work in M.E. & R.A.M. Degree, Tecumseh Chap. doing work in M.E.Deg & Adrian Chap doing it in R.A. Deg.

10 Friday            I went down to the Mill a little while this A/M. to see how the water was going through.  This P.M. I husked a few bush. of corn on barn floor.

11 Saturday            I husked some corn this A.M. in the barn.  This P.M. Minnie, Ethel & I went up to town.

 12 Sunday            We did not go to Church to day. I did not feel like going.  This eve Minnie, Otto and I went over to Mr. Cupples a little while.

13 Monday            I worked down in the Hog Pen fixing west part for a Hen roost to day.  Geo and May were down a little while this A.M.

14 Tuesday            I fixed up the nests in the hog Pen where I made hen roost. Fixed mowing machine & c. This P.M. I went up to town, called on George’s folks a little while.  Bought and paid for a bbl of Gran Sugar of C.E. Williamson 336# @ 5.27, $17.70 and 1 bu Hand Picked white beans $2.10.

15 Weds            I chored around and tinkered at odd jobs this A.M.  This P.M. Mr Cupples and I went to town afoot.           

16 Thurs            This A.M. I sowed clover seed on field No. 4.  This P.M. Minnie, Arnie and I went up to town. Minnie went up to F.H. B’s and Arnie and I came home and done the chores and then I went up to Tea.  F. Bryan & wife, J.K. Waldron & wife were there.

17 Friday            I sowed field No. 6 with clover seed this A.M. This P.M. I went up to Chan Bills to an Auction. This Eve I went up to Lodge.  Paid Mr. Cupples $15.00 for 2 bu cloverseed.

18 Saturday            I made some canvass hen nests this A.M.  This P.M. the boys and I went up to town.

 19 Sunday            The Girls and I went up to Church to day.

20 Monday            I helped Mr. Cupples get his farm implements out for his sale this P.M. I went over to Mr. Cupples Sale this P.M.  I bought stack of hay @ $23.00.  His sale amounted to $348.05.

21 Tuesday            I went up to town and brought 2 loads of Household goods down for Geo. J. B. this A.M.  This P.M. Minnie, Arnie and I went up to town and bought a 2d hand Wood stove of D. Whitemack & Co. Paid $10.00 cash for it.  Geo. & I went over to Mrs Satterthwaite’s Auction. (after 3:15 P.M.) I bought a 3 year old ¾ Jersey cow of Mr. Bickford for $38.00, pd him $20.00 cash.

22 Weds            It was rainy to day.  Geo fixed his goods and settled his room, & c.  This P.M. I husked corn that was on Barn floor.

23 Thurs            I helped Mr. Cupples move up to town to day.  I drew 3 loads up for him.  Geo dug and worked on cellers way to day.

24 Friday            I helped Mr Cupples move to day.  I drew 2 loads up to town for him to day.  I got some lumber to fix new stair way  Geo fixed stairs to go down celler to day.  I brought home a bbl gran sugar 336# @ 5 ¼ cent and ¼ bu beans.  I went up to Chapter Meegin this eve. 5 & 6 degree work.

25 Saturday            Geo and I tore out old stairs and made new ones to day in the house.  This eve Geo and I went up to town a little while.  {Arnet would have been 5 years old on this day}

 26 Sunday            We all went up to Church to day. May and Ethel came home from their Grand Ma’s with us from S.S.

27 Monday            Geo and I worked in the house to day, fixing over old doors in new places.

28 Tuesday            I took a load of wood (1½ c) up to Mr. Cupples this Morn and got some lumber to make some partitions in the house.  Old Comfort calved this Morn.

29 Weds            Minnie, the Girls and I went up to J.K. Waldron to dinner. John Heason and wife were there.  Minnie staid up to D.B.G.’s until Chapter Meeting, but not enough members present to open the Chapter, and went up and spent the eve at D.B.G,s

30 Thurs            Geo and I worked in the house this A.M.  This P.M. I scraped the roads and Geo husked corn.  This Eve Minnie and I went up to Star Lodge.

31 Friday            I went down to Holloway and had the horses shoes reset in front and bought and brought home a Roller that I bought of Mr. Carpenter.  This Eve I went up to Lodge.  Geo husked corn this A.M. and rolled this P.M. I husked corn this P.M.
