The first entry is a transcript of the journal of Gurdon B. Garlinghouse, born in 1854 in Lenawee County, Michigan. He married Minnie Gates in 1879 and they had four children: May, 1881; Ethelyn, 1882; Otto, 1885 and Arnet, 1888.

The journal is being transcribed by Holly Wilson Sweet, great-grand-daughter of Gurdon and Minnie, beginning January 2005. Notes are in brackets are Holly's.

 1 Saturday            We drew in and finished No. 3 this AM 3 loads.  This PM we fixed up hay fork and drew in 4 loads from No. 1. It rained about 5 oclock. Minnie & Geo and I went up to town this eve.

2 Sunday            We all went to Church to day. 


3 Monday            Geo cultivated corn on Dr Whites with 2 horses to day. I cultivated the garden and hoed in the same this AM. This PM I cultivated corn & potatoes in field No. 7 with old Fran

4 Tuesday            Geo cultivated corn on Dr Whites with 2 horses this AM. I cultivated corn & potatoes in field No. 7 with old Fran this AM. This PM we drew hay - 4 loads from No. 1 & 1 load from No.8. May & Arne went up to town. They brought home a sprinkling pot from Whitenack’s.

5 Weds            We all went down to Adrian to Forepaughs Show to day. I called and took dinner with May Harkness and called on Lorenzo’s folks on way home. Geo cultivated corn on Dr Whites with 2 horses this AM. This PM he mowed in No. 8.

6 Thursday            It was rainy this AM. Geo & I fixed bay on E side of barn floor.  Tore out cow stanchions & old Grannery, so as to put in hay this AM.  This PM we put up and drew wheat down to Boyd & Root’s Mill. Mr & Mrs H.A. Smith called this eve.

7 Friday            I drew 2 loads of wheat down to Boyd & Root’s Mill this AM. Total 304.18/60 bu @ 60¢– 1 lb dockage for dirt. Received cash in full $178.54.  Paid for 2 bags Bran 90¢ on a/c. Tedded out hay rest of AM. This PM Geo & I put up hay in No. 8.  This AM Geo pulled weeds from late potatoes in No. 7. This eve I went up to Chapter Meeting. Pd Wm McKendress on a/c $70.75.

8 Saturday            Geo and I drew hay to day from No. 8 - 8 loads. This eve I went up to town. Bought sack of twine of Whitenack’s. Pure Manilla 60# @ 14¢. Pd him to ball a/c $4.97.  Paid C. Albaugh repairs on binder in full to date $1.25.

9 Sunday            We all went to Church to day.  This PM Minnie, Arne and I went down to other place, salted the cattle & sheep then we called on C.W.B’s folks a little while.


10 Monday            Geo finished moving to day about 3:30 PM in No. 8. I worked on binder getting it ready to cut wheat this AM. This PM I raked up hay & we put up some and drew 2 loads to the barn.

11 Tuesday            I fixed binder and cut wheat 2 hrs in No. 2 and helped Geo set it up the rest of AM. This PM we raked and put up hay in No. 8.  This eve Geo & I went up to town.

12 Weds            I finished cutting field of wheat in No. 2 at 11 AM, was just 6 hrs cutting the field. This PM I cut wheat in No. 4, 3 ½ hrs.  D.B.G. came down and helped Geo shock up wheat to day. Ethel & Otto went up to Grandmothers to day. She brought them home and sit a little while.

13 Thursday            We finished cutting wheat in No. 4 this AM and had it set up.  This PM we cut & set up wheat in No. 6, 2 hrs was rained off.

14 Friday            I finished cutting wheat this AM. Geo & Dan set some up. This PM Dan & I drew 4 loads of hay from No. 8. Geo helped us unload and set up wheat while we were after the loads.

15 Saturday            Dan & I drew hay to day from No. 8 – 8 loads. Geo finished setting up wheat in No. 6 ths AM. It rained at noon.  This eve Minnie & I went up to town. Pd Geo $10.00 and Sed. McConnell $35.00 for cattle.. ball due on them.

16 Sunday            The Girls and I went up to Sunday School to day. The Girls went to their Grandmothers.


17 Monday            Geo cultivated potatoes and corn this AM in No. 7. I went up to mill for grist (8 bu). Took 5 bu for Dan and flour to him. This PM we drew 5 loads of wheat from No. 2 and put in stack.

18 Tuesday            We drew wheat to day, 4 loads from No. 2 and finished that field, and 4 loads from No. 4. Put in stack west of shed. North stack has 10 ½ loads. 9 loads from No. 2; 1 ½ from No. 4.

19 Weds            We drew wheat to day. 6 loads from No. 4 and 3 from No. 6 and put in stack.

20 Thursday            We finished drawing wheat to day about 4 PM.  Dan & I thinned out corn and Geo mowed some fence corners.  This eve Minnie & I went up to F. Bryans to take canvass home & called on Mrs Cupples & Mother. Paid Dan $8.00 cash, $3.00 wheat.

21 Friday            Geo cultivated corn in field No. 7 this AM. This PM he cultivated on Dr Whites. This AM I went down to the woods and salted cattle.

22 Saturday            Geo cultivated corn on Dr Whites to day. I went up to town and had some longer irons made to put on cultivator for gong once in a row. This PM I went up to town & staid this eve.


23 Sunday            Geo & the boys staid at home to day. The rest of us went to Church. This eve Minnie, Geo, May & I went up to Church. Mrs McAbee, Salvation Army woman spoke. Minnie & I called on Mrs Cupples folks before going to church.

24 Monday            Geo cultivated corn on Dr Whites to day and finished going over it. I thinned out corn in No. 7 part of AM and tinkered on binder some. This PM I went over to O.B.’s and borrowed his cradle and cut a few oats in peach orchard.

25 Tuesday            I cut oats in peach orchard and around oats in W half No. 7 this AM. Geo went down to woods and got a load of rails and put around stack of wheat S of barn. This PM Geo bound oats. I went up to town and brought home Mr & Mrs Wm & Mr & Mrs J.W. Cupples & Daughter & Florence. Mother came down to day.

26 Weds            Geo started to plow field No. 2 this AM, worked til 9:30 AM. Then we went and cut the oats in No. 7 and set them nearly all up.

27 Thursday            Geo plowed today in No. 2 with 3 horses. I sowed some turnip seed this morn. Then I bound oats in peach orchard. This PM I finished setting up oats in No. 7 and set up what was bound in peach orchard. Minnie and the boys went up to town this AM, came home about 6 PM.

28 Friday            Geo plowed this AM with 3 horses in No. 2.  This PM he rolled with 2 in No. 2.  This PM our family took tea with Mr & Mrs Cupples. I hoed some in garden and finished binding & setting up oats in peach orchard this AM.

29 Saturday            Geo plowed in No. 2 with 3 horses to day. I thinned out corn on Dr Whites this AM.  This eve we all went up to town.

30 Sunday            I and the boys staid at home to day. The rest of the folks went to church. This eve Minnie, Ethel and I went down to the other place to look after the cattle & sheep.


31 Monday            Geo plowed with 3 horses in No. 2 this AM and we drew 5 loads of oats from peach orchard and 4 from No. 7.   I thinned out corn on Dr Whites this AM.
