The first entry is a transcript of the journal of Gurdon B. Garlinghouse, born in 1854 in Lenawee County, Michigan. He married Minnie Gates in 1879 and they had four children: May, 1881; Ethelyn, 1882; Otto, 1885 and Arnet, 1888.

The journal is being transcribed by Holly Wilson Sweet, great-grand-daughter of Gurdon and Minnie, beginning January 2005. Notes are in brackets are Holly's.

January 1893

1 Sunday It snowed all day. We all staid at home all the day long. This eve the snow is about seven in deep.

2 Monday It was a snowy day. I took the Children to school this morn and went up to town {Tecumseh} to mail some letters. This P.M. I made three pr of mittens out of a grain sack.

3 Tues I went down to the wood and got a load of wood (2 cords) with the Bobs[led]. This eve we all went over to Will Rectors to the Farmers club. Wm Burns bought 1 cord ash wood today, and bought one cord last year, which makes total no. 2 cords.

4 Wed I went down to the woods and got a load of wood 1? cords. This Eve I went up to Chapter Meeting M.M. Deg (F.J. Temple and Johnes Haight)

5 Thursday Minnie and I went up to the B. Church to day to a Chicken Pie Dinner. Minnie staid and I came home and done the chores and went back after her after doing the chores. Ben J. G. Paid me ball. of Two hundred dollars amt due me in settling of Fathers Estate. I put the whole amount in Bank.
{Benson and Burton Garlinghouse were Gurdon’s twin brothers born in 1861; John B Garlinghouse, their father, died December 1, 1892}

6 Friday I drew a load of wood up to town and sold it to Chas. Bird for his Mother for $2.25 this A.M. This P.M. Mr. Cupples and I drew 2 loads of hay from cow stable and put in sheep shed.

7 Saturday I went down to the woods and got a load of wood this A.M. This P.M. I took a load of Hickory wood to Mr E.D. Chilson 1? cords. Minnie, Ethelyn and Otto went along. I bought 4 bu shelled corn of Slayton. Pd for it (50 cents per bu) had 2 bu corn, 1 bu oats & 1 bu wheat ground together for cow feed.

8 Sunday The Girls and I went up to Church to day. Frank Benedict and family came down here this P.M. and staid till 8 P.M.
{Frank was Gurdon’s cousin, the son of John W. Benedict – Gurdon’s mother’s brother}

9 Monday I drove Heifer down to Aaron Taylors this A.M. This P.M. I chored around shelled corn oc.
{Gurdon’s maternal grandmother was Phebe Taylor Benedict – not sure how this Aaron fits in}

10 Tuesday Minnie was sick to day. It was quite cold to day, the coldest it has been this year. I went up to town and got some medicine of Dr North for Minnie this P.M. Mother & Burt were down this eve a little while.
{Gurdon’s mother was Mary Jane Benedict Garlinghouse, born in 1827 in New York. Burt was the other twin brother}

11 Wed It was a stormy day and quite cold, mercury about zero. I staid around the house and took care of Minnie. Dr Frost came down to see her this P.M.

12 Thurs I staid around the house and helped Minnie, and done chores this A.M. This P.M. Mrs Cupples came over and sit with Minnie and I went up to town with Mr Cupples. Mother came down and staid this P.M. Geo J. B. & Wife were down this Eve.

13 Friday I staid around the house and done the chores and looked after things in and around the house. Minnie seemed some better to day. Geo & May came down to day. Geo took our team and drew a load of wood for himself to day.

14 Saturday I chored around all day and helped some in the house. Dr Frost was down to see Minnie this morning. She is feeling better this eve. Mother came down this P.M. and staid till 7 P.M. this eve. The Boys went up and staid with Ben while Mother was here. Geo J. B. went down to H.Y. after some sawdust for me but he did not get any.

15 Sunday It was very cold to day. We all staid at home. Minnie was a little better Dr Frost came to see her this A.M. Mr Cupples called. Mr and Mrs Mize called. Mr and Mrs Finch called and Geo and May called this P.M.
{Gurdon’s father’s sister was Joanna Garlinghouse. She was married to John Finch}

16 Monday I chored around this A.M. and helped Minnie. This P.M. I went up to town and got old Gim shod in front and some stove pipe to fix up stove in dining room. Mr. & Mrs Smith called this P.M. and Mr & Mrs J.K. Waldron also called. I got some medicine for Minnie from Dr Frost.

17 Tuesday I staid around the house and done chores to day. Minnie was feeling better to day than yesterday. Geo J. B. came down here, took my team and drew 1? cord wood for me from wood lot. He worked about 5 hrs. Mr Cupples was over a little while.

18 Weds I chored around this A.M. and done some work to help Minnie in the house. This P.M. Mr Cupples and I went up to town. Mrs C staid with Minnie while we were gone. It snowed very hard when we were going up.

19 Thurs I staid at home to day, done chores and help some around the house. Minnie was feeling better to day. Geo drew a load of wood to day from wood lot.

20 Friday I chored around this A.M., piled up the dry wood n. of wood shed. This P.M. I went up to town after some things and got some medicine for Minnie. George drew a load of wood from wood lot for me to day.

21 Saturday I chored around this A.M. George came and went after a load of wood for me to day. This P.M. I went up to P.M. Train as one of the Pall Bearers of Mrs Mark Fesenden. She was brought down to O.B’s
{Another cousin was Ornan B. Finch – He could have been the undertaker}

22 Sunday May, Ethel and I went to Church to day and s. school. This P.M. Mark Fesenden’s Wife was laid in the Vault in Tecumseh Cemetery. Funeral at the Baptist Church at 2.30.

23 Monday I done chores and helped about the washing to day. R.M. Boyd called this P.M. Mother drove down and staid a little while. Frank & Fannie Bryan drove into yard a few moments. Geo. J.B. went down to H.Y. and got 51? bu shelled corn for me and had Dick’s shoes reset on front feet.

24 Tuesday I took 2 hogs up to W. Marsh Slaughter House this morn for him to kill and dress. George went down to the woods and got a load of wood to day. I went over to Mr Cupples this Eve a little while. It snowed most all this P.M.

25 Weds I took 1 7/8 cord of wood up to G.J. Benedict this A.M. and brought home our Dressed Hogs from W. Marshe’s Slaughter House. Geo went after a load of wood. I cut up the Hogs and chored around. This Eve I went up to Chapter Meeting.

26 Thurs I done chores and went over to Mr Cupples a little while this A.M. and cut up some sausage meat. This P.M. I went up to town and got sausage cut and some things for Mr Cupples. This Eve Minnie and I went up to Star Meeting – a large crowd there.

27 Friday I done chores, went up to town for Mr Cupples folks - -did not feel very well.

28 Saturday I went down to the woods and drew up 2 cords of wood to day. It was warm this P.M. and the snow melted very fast. Fixed tank so water would go into it from pump.

29 Sunday May and I went up to Church to day. It was a cool air but the water ran some in the road. Minnie and I went over to Mr Cupples a little while this P.M.

30 Monday I helped about cutting up some meat to make lard out of. Mr Holmes came down and helped load a load of straw. I took it up to him this P.M. and took a grist to Mill of 3 bu wheat, and 2 bags of corn & oats for feed for cows.

31 Tuesday I went down to the woods and drew up a load of wood to day. It was quite icy and ground bare in some spots. It is raining this eve.
