The first entry is a transcript of the journal of Gurdon B. Garlinghouse, born in 1854 in Lenawee County, Michigan. He married Minnie Gates in 1879 and they had four children: May, 1881; Ethelyn, 1882; Otto, 1885 and Arnet, 1888.

The journal is being transcribed by Holly Wilson Sweet, great-grand-daughter of Gurdon and Minnie, beginning January 2005. Notes are in brackets are Holly's.

1 Saturday            I took down wire off of the poles I put up through the place last spring to connect to the Y & M Line this AM.  This PM I went up to town. Paid O.B. Finch money on Farm to date, Mr. Cupples and Mother.  Geo rolled to day.

2 Sunday            We all went to Church to day.  The Girls staid up to their Grand Mothers till evening.

3 Monday            I went down to the Town House and worked as one of the Board of Electors for Spring election.  Geo rolled this AM.  This PM he went down to town house to vote.

4 Tuesday            I went down to the town house this AM and helped fix out the reports of the election.  Geo rolled to day.

5 Weds            I went down to the woods and sowed clover seed this AM on the field three. This PM I went up to town and had 2 bags of feed ground for the cows.

6 Thursday            I fixed up leach and done other jobs about the Place.  This PM Minnie and I went up to town and to the social.  I paid A.P. Coddington Ten Dollars on Church Parsonage.

7 Friday            I husked corn to day in the Peach orchard and finished husking it this PM. Geo fixed molding around the closet door and base board next to the Partitions.  This even I went to Lodge and to see the Dr a minute.  Arnie & Otto were sick to day and Ethel came home sick from school this eve.

8 Saturday            I went down to Mr Lee Conklin’s and bought 2 2yr-old steers for $65.00. Paid him on steers $30.  Bought one bu Early Vermont Potatoes, pd 75 cents for them.  Geo drawed manure and covered Garden this AM.  This PM he plowed for oats in field No. 7.

9 Sunday            Minnie, May and Geo & May went to Church to day.  The rest of us staid at home.  The Children were not feeling very well.

10 Monday            Geo plowed the garden this morning and plowed for oats in field No. 7 the rest of the day.  I fixed over some fence and fixed partly the jacket around the big kettle.

11 Tuesday            I made soap this AM and fixed some garden fence this PM.  Geo finished plowing for oats in field No. 7 this PM and rolled some.

12 Weds            I went over to Wm. Montague’s and bought 56 Ewes and lambs for $200 to take on or before 2 weeks from to day this AM.  This PM I set out strawberry bed and some onions.  Geo worked in the house this AM.  This PM rolled oat ground.

13 Thursday            I went over to Wm McKendrie’s and bought 3 2-yr-old steers and 1 2-yr-old heifer for $100 to take next week.  It rained quite hard last eve.  Geo set some posts on N. side of lane east of House and fixed fence.  This PM Geo dragged for oats with 3 horses in field No. 7.  I cleaned seed oats.

14 Friday            It was cold to day. I made a little garden.  Geo dragged for oats this AM. This PM Geo sowed oats in field No. 7 west ½ 5 ½ A with O.B’s drill.  12 bu seed.

15 Saturday            It snowed quite hard last night.  Geo and I drew a stack of hay I bought of Mr Cupples at his sale.  Sold a load to Mr. Mize 2/50# @ $9.00 per ton.  Took 2 bags corn and 2 bags oats to Mill and had ground this PM.  Minnie & May went up to town this PM.

16 Sunday            The Girls, Minnie and I went up to Church to day.

17 Monday            I went down to the woods and laid up line fence between Geo Rilley and ours to day.  Geo Plowed and sowed oats in Peach orchard to day.

18 Tuesday            Geo and I planted early potatoes in field No. 7 (7 rows N. & S.) E of oats this AM.  This PM we started the plow on Dr Whites for corn.

19 Weds            It was stormy to day.  I fixed handles into a fork & hoe and went up to town this AM and staid until about 4:30 PM.  Geo plowed this AM on Dr Whites.  This PM he chored around.

20 Thursday            It was stormy this AM.  Geo and I greased the harnesses and fixed them some.  The PM I went up to town and Geo split wood.

21 Friday            I took a load of wood to Mr Cupples – 1½  cords; 4 10/60 bu wheat to Mill for grist; one bag to Mother to feed her chickens.  Bought some bran $1.15 worth. Mr Cupples pd me #3.00 for 3 cords wood.  Mother & her Girl came down this AM and staid till 5 oclock PM.

22 Saturday            Geo and I went over to Geo Handfords and got 4 head of 2-yr-old cattle this AM. I bought of Wm McKendrie for $100.00 paid him $30.00 cash and note of $70.00 Due July 1st.  This PM Minnie & I went up to Mr Robt Carnes to a Tea Party.  Geo split wood.  Otto and Arnie went up and staid with their GrandMa this PM.

23 Sunday            We all went to Church except Minnie & the Boys to day.

24 Monday            I laid up fence that had blown down on the farm this AM.  Geo plowed with 3 horses on Dr Whites this AM.  This PM Minnie & the Girls went over to MR Rogers with old Dick.  Geo and I went over to Wm Montagues and got the sheep I bought of him the 12th.  Paid him $50.00 cash and gave him my not of $150.00 payable on or before 4 mos from date @ 6%.

25 Tuesday            I split wood most of the day.  Geo set some posts to straighten up the fence on N. side of lane E. of house.  This PM Geo plowed with 3 horses on Dr Whites.

26 Weds            Geo plowed to day with 3 horses on Dr Whites until about 3:30 PM.  It began to rain so had to go in.  I finished splitting wood back of the house this AM.  This Eve I went up to Chapter Meeting.

27 Thursday            Geo and May went down to C.W.B’s to day with old Dick and the buggy.  It rained quite hard lat night and was to wet to plow.  I tinkered around laid up some fence that had blown down.  This eve Minnie and I went up to Chapter Meeting of E. Star.

28 Friday            Geo plowed to day with 3 horses until about 4:30 PM.  It began to rain.  I fixed C.Y Line to run on poles instead of running on the house.  This AM I put leached ashes around shrubbery in front yard.

29 Saturday            It was rainy this AM.  Geo cleaned out Hen house this AM and plowed with 3 horses on Dr Whites this PM.  Minnie and I went up to town this AM.  This PM I went up to town, came home and helped do the chores and Geo and I went up after supper.  The Girls went up to town this PM and staid all night.

30 Sunday            It was rainy to day.  We all staid at home.  This PM I went up after the Girls.
